Should your website have an AI chatbot?
An AI chatbot is worth adding when visitors ask the same questions repeatedly (pricing ranges, delivery times, services, availability) and those answers already exist in your business information. Done well, it answers instantly, captures leads around the clock and hands complex conversations to a human.
Done badly, it slows the site down, invents answers and annoys customers. Here's how to get it right.
Step 1: Decide what the chatbot is for
Pick one or two jobs:
- Answer FAQs from your own content
- Qualify leads and save them to your CRM or Google Sheet
- Check order status for an online store
- Book appointments
A chatbot that tries to do everything usually does nothing well.
Step 2: Give it a trusted knowledge source
The bot should answer only from information you control: FAQs, service pages, policies, product data. This approach is often called retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). The system finds the relevant passages first, then the AI writes an answer based on them.
Instruct it clearly: if the answer isn't in the provided information, say so and offer a human.
Step 3: Keep your website fast
A chatbot must never hurt Core Web Vitals or SEO:
- Load the widget after the page is interactive, not in the
<head>. - Show a lightweight button first; load the full chat code only when someone clicks it.
- Keep the AI calls on your server, never in the browser, so API keys stay secret.
Step 4: Add guardrails
- Keep it on topic: no medical, legal or financial advice unless that's your business.
- Never let it promise prices, discounts or deadlines that aren't in your data.
- Rate-limit requests to stop abuse and runaway API costs.
- Mask personal data before sending it to the AI provider where possible.
Step 5: Always offer a human
Give a one-tap handover to WhatsApp or email, with the conversation attached. For many businesses (especially in Pakistan, the Gulf and the UK) WhatsApp is where customers already expect to talk.
Step 6: Measure and improve
Review conversation logs every week:
| Metric | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Questions it couldn't answer | Tells you what content to add |
| Leads captured | Direct business value |
| Handover rate | Too high means weak knowledge or a poor scope |
| Wrong answers | Fix prompts and sources immediately |
Quick checklist
- One clear job for the bot
- Answers only from your own content
- Loads after the page, no speed impact
- Server-side API calls and rate limits
- Human handover to WhatsApp or email
- Weekly log review
